How do you manage data transfers and sharing across borders and entities?

Knowing your data even means knowing the exceptions. Privacy professionals- this is your sign to include security in data mapping because they will also know about the exceptions and change management process with access control policies and use. These exceptions are often where data inventorys gloss over. Complete your mapping, but don't forget to ask - What about for the employees who either 1)don't play by the rules or 2)ask for exceptions? The best change management policy will have a ticking time clock on any requested exception that allows for oversight and a definite end date so that you are not surprised by some legacy un-resolved and un-terminated data use/collection/processing.

In my experience a data inventory is the foundation for any privacy program. Its also how I identify high risk processing activities & data transfers. In addition it can help you with your Individual Rights Management activities as you should be able to see where the information lives in your ecosystem.

More than understanding the rules, understanding why the rules exist will deeply inform your impact assessments. The authorities making the rules are seeing risks that your organization may otherwise not be aware of on its own.
