Specify, “Spearheaded the digital transformation initiative of the operations department that led to a 35% surge in quarterly revenues and reduced cash burn by 23%.” instead of “Responsible for the digital transformation of the operations department.” Describe your role with words like “overhaul,” “orchestrate,” and “engineer.” You're not just fulfilling tasks, you're leading transformations. Craft your narrative to stand out, not just fit in.

Be careful not to overuse words like "manage", "results", etc. Most action verbs should be used only once in your resume so look up a thesaurus and maybe employe ChatGPT to help you if you are having difficulty being creative.

However, many students and graduates struggle to find relevant examples. Brainstorming times when you have collaborated, partnered, co-created, aligned, influenced, persuaded, and inspired is a great way to identify examples you can put into the resume. Not only will this highlight those valuable collaboration and communication skills, but it will position you as a leader.

Having (and showcasing) a growth mindset is so key if you want to be an effective and transformational leader. I recommend highlighting examples where you proactively sought out new skills, adapted to changing circumstances, and leveraged feedback to improve your performance. Mention specific examples of how you embraced challenges, learned from failures, and inspired others to adopt a similar approach to personal and professional development. By emphasizing your commitment to continuous learning and improvement, you'll exhibit the key qualities of a transformational leader who fosters a culture of innovation within a team or organization.

Other times, I see writing that focuses more on the "thing" rather than the personal involvement and influence. For example, software engineers and product developers tend to give much detail on what their design does and, in doing so, fail to capture what they did to initiate and amplify the design success. Again, dig into the weeds. Follow the path far enough down the line to identify the true influencers and results.

This approach allows you to assess their ability to generate original solutions and analyze complex problems effectively. My 2 cents: This probably somewhat fits into one of the previous points in the article, but I'll mention it anyway. In our experience, one of the best and simplest ways to showcase leadership/innovation in the resume (as a student or graduate) is to provide an example of when you went above and beyond to improve some part of the organisation (e.g. a process or new initiative), whether it's in a volunteering role, internship, industry project, you name it! We find that by illustrating an example like this in combination with action verbs and quantifiable results, we can hit 2 birds with one stone. It shows employers that you're both innovative and a leader at the same time.

Don't waste precious blank space on your resume saying you're innovative, collaborative, and strategic... use that space to showcase your successes from being innovative, collaborative, and strategic. Use these competencies, skills, and behaviors to frame how you accomplish such incredible outcomes. Focus on the outcome, with the journey to get there being a brief overview of the problem you solved and the competencies you used to drive innovation.
