How can you teach players to learn from their mistakes?

I like to remind myself and my team about Thomas Edison. In the 1920s, a journalist asked Thomas Edison how it felt to fail 1000 times in his attempt to invent the incandescent lightbulb. He replied, “I didn't fail 1000 times. The lightbulb was an invention with 1000 steps.” I think learning from your experience and moving forward and figuring out ways to not make that mistake again is important.

I've found it helpful make it clear that it is okay to make mistakes. No one is perfect, and if there weren't any mistakes, there would be no chance of improving and getting better. Next, I explain that it is also okay to be critiqued or called out (respectfully) by other coaches and teammates if they also notice a mistake. If errors are not called out, we can't identify them and start the process of fixing them. For example, if someone doesn't make the proper rotation during a match, it must be addressed at the next practice to prevent it from happening again. But it NEEDS to be identified and addressed. I tell my kids (gamers and my children) that it's not about how you messed up; it's how you recover from them.

Admitting, even if only to yourself is the best learning experience available. Not only do you learn you develop a little bit more maturity for life.

During our practices, we review gameplay videos and see where we can ALL improve. We discuss the what the players were thinking at certain points as a group and opened the floor to everyone to share their thoughts and advice. I have found it easier to discuss mistakes as no one is singled out during the session, and everyone is contributing. After we review it, we pick a few solutions to each mistake. It can be things like researching other information, reviewing videos, improving communication or specific call-outs at crucial points in the match, or if we need to adjust our strategy to play to everyone's strengths.

Why did you make the mistake? If it just a simple error of calculation or the equivalent learn to check twice but if it is due to fear, insecurity or emotions then that knowledge is a vital step forward.

After we review videos and notes to identify areas of improvement, we make adjustments or create new strategies to correct them. Then, we work on practicing and working on the strategy in scrimmages or other game-like situations to make sure it fixes the issue or determine if we need to tweak it some more. This also builds muscle memory so it becomes second nature when the situation happens in a real game. However, we ensure that we keep a positive and respectful atmosphere and a healthy and positive mindset throughout the entire process of identifying, addressing and fixing mistakes and issues.

Learn from reliable sources, ignore the random advice givers on the internet, in the pub or anyone who is too pushy. Science is golden.

Develop systems or processes whether written or otherwise. Then actually use them. If you do not like the method then review and change it don't just ignore it.

Give yourself a congratulations or a reward. Does not have to be substantial. If it is applicable to others find the best way to disseminate it.
