How can you incorporate multiple languages to improve e-learning courses?

Make sure you get native speakers that live in the countries where the language is spoken, language is a living and ever-changing channel of communication and it´s important to have up-to-date vocabulary. Also, the same language has great variations (eg.: someone in Ireland and someone in South Africa speaks a very different English version) in some cases the nuances are minor, but in others, there can be a great misunderstanding. Also, industry specific review is highly recommended.

- Write in the shortest sentences possible. Eliminate sub or relative clauses. - Don't leave testing the translatability until you have a complete script. Use a tool such as Google Translate as part of the writing process - you can test by translating each sentence into another language and back into the original language. Select a few target languages and make sure you consistently get back the meanings you intended across all of them. Doing this will tighten up the writing in the first place and help you reduce the sorts of issues which will cause problems in the localisation process.

I would suggest: If dealing with generic compliance awareness topics, focus on best practice/principles avoiding specific regulations to keep it universal. If using scenarios with imagery, scope and share with others to check it’s culturally appropriate and isn’t stereotypical. Be careful/avoid external links. Avoid images with text that needs translation, or is culturally exclusive. Unless using computer voices, avoid multiple voiced characters as it will add considerable time and cost. Seek advice from your network/audiences, listen to advice and be flexible - one size won’t always fit all. If it’s within your budget, find a good translation partner - their expertise will take a lot of risk and pain out of the process. And, be lucky 😊

Often building e-learning content in multiple languages is dealt with as a basic translation exercise. Having built content in multiple languages I have received the following feedback from the audience: 1. It's alright to use a few words in English within the core content since the same word might not exist in the other language and content creators end up using archaic vocabulary that is not colloquial 2. Think about explaining the storyboard to the translator and if possible create it from scratch in the local language if that's possible. 3. Visuals and images are critical to the overall story, check if the images conceptualized in the original language are a conflict culturally Summary: Don't translate, storyboard in the language.

It’s easy to have things lost in translation. If the source content is in English, it’s important to use global English to ensure the universality of the content to begin it — after all, you most likely won’t translate the content into every single language. Even with a professional translation service, it’s important to have it vetted by a diverse set of colleagues that can verify if the translation is sound. Make sure you build in ample time to do this, and also have a process to ensure the content is reviewed after a period of time. With time, our contexts, culture, and norms change — and that’s reflected in our language. The content may stay accurate after a year, but the tone or cultural appropriateness may need to be adjusted.

Translation is much more than just translating the words; you have to keep note of the cultural differences as well. Many people apply this in the design of the course and symbols and colors, but what is often overlooked are the anecdotes, scenarios, and examples used that often remain untranslated and irrelevant to the new target audience. When translating a course, you have to seek out new SMEs who speak the target language and are familiar with the target audience to give you insights on the scenarios and anecdotes used that could be more relevant.

In my localization experience I was challenged with the known issue: in my target languages the translated text usually takes up 1.5-2 times more space than it originally does in English. So it is really important that the layout in the LMS or on the website is adaptable and flexible to be able to accommodate the translated materials. Same goes for any labels or texts on visuals - if they need translation as well, there should be enough flexibility considering the background and items location that the new longer text has space and won't cover up important parts of the picture. This is especially important for infographics, which usually contain a lot of small-sized text and images all in one place, and so pose an even bigger challenge.

Best practice for design of multilingual content includes intentional planning of copy and scripts. Be sure to use simple language and avoid slang and popular culture phrases from North America. Some terms and phrases simply won't translate.

If you are using Rise (from Articulate 360) you can adjust the layout and alignment for RTL languages through the exported file before uploading it into your LMS. Simple HTML adjustments would go a long way for your learners :)

It is crucial to consider the voices of your audience. You may find that you need to consult with more knowledgeable individuals at various points during the design phase. Take time to speak to those who are more experienced at speaking the specific language you want to incorporate. By doing so, you ensure correct pronunciation and usage of the language throughout your course. Consistency is crucial in this regard, therefore, attempt to use a single voice throughout your audio recordings.

I also recommend to add space for language-Specific Forums or Discussions: Creating separate forums or discussion spaces for different languages will allow the participants to engage comfortably in their preferred language, I use this one on a regular basis and this actually help them to open up without thinking of their broken English which some others could make fun of.Results will be more engaged learners as it enhances their learning experience.

For example, incorporating video interviews in the language being taught enhances the learning experience.

Please be respectful of the audience. Most Zoom platforms have an option for the presenter ahead of time to check that the transcripts for that live meeting, and/or captions, are correct before integrating them into a professional setting.

Everyone can agree that using audio or video can enhance a multilingual e-learning. Here it's also crucial to know your target group. If for example you use English and your participants are not natives, don't only use voice-over videos. For some non-native speaker is is helpful to see the speaker, not just for the pronunciation, but also for the non verbal parts of the communication. Don't use Videos without speakers. They are just terrible.

Evaluating your course" can be divided into 3 parts: 1) Initial evaluation and testing of content. Hopefully this is being done while you create, but certainly once content is complete and prior to release. Catch those early mistakes! 2) Ask for feedback from others. Often, others can see things you SWEAR you would have caught! Not to mention they provide an alternative perspective to what you create and therefore can provide meaningful feedback and insights into your courses and content. 3) Iterate and improve. Don't be satisfied with simply testing a few times and calling it a day. Use step #2 to learn what's good, what's not good, what is NEW and how you can consistently evolve your course. Things change quickly, make sure you're on top.

Whenever I am invited to address a seminar or conference one of the questions I ask is which language would be suitable. In North India, where I am situated, there are three options of using English or Hindi or both. Often I am told to speak in English which is of course convenient for me too. But for some training programs such as ones for street vendors or factory workers it is more feasible to use the local language. I have often used a combination of Hindi plus a smattering of commonly understood English words in my interaction with factory workers. Strangely and interestingly, it is often better to use commonly understood English words than use difficult local words that might not be easily comprehended.

Another important thing to consider is to be aware of software localization if the e-course is a practical course on how to use a particular software (video editor, word processor, design etc.). It is absolutely necessary to use the software in question in the target language while translating the course, as even though sometimes you might come up with a better translation for a tab, action or tool, the learner actually using your course should be easily able to find the item in question and it must be named exactly the same as it is in the software target language version. Otherwise, unnecessary confusion and frustration would inevitably occur, and this is definitely not something you would wish your learner to experience while learning.

It's important to communicate the feedback on the e-learning courses with your team, brainstorm what could have been done better, and what could have been avoided. This not only increases the quality of the team's results, but also foster their learning.

From my experience, I enjoy teaching my students while using technology. E- learning supports learners in several aspects beyond our expectations. Even if the content of the lesson, for example, was a bit challenging because of the language, students can find their answers by using translation tools such as Google translate or any other search engine that is available online.

First, determine the purpose of the course for the learners. Is content primary? Interaction with others in a language other than the primary one? Building domain-specific competence in a another language? Training a group that will need to function in a multilingual setting? There are many instructional models. Selecting the appropriate one depends on the answers to these questions.
