It is vital to check understanding and solicit feedback during and at the end of the workshop to make any necessary adjustments. The most effective way has been in pre-workshop communication. Know what is to be covered and ask folks to listen for certain key points then ask for a quick summary afterwards - nothing huge. Giving folks items to focus on before the workshop helps them focus and pay attention to the most important details. Another tactic is to give participants an opportunity to do mini-teaching sessions to their peers. It's important that their peers give feedback and that feedback is structured so that it is effective.

May I add that it is vital to shepherd the participants and discussions to the objectives. Be disciplined to stick to the topic(s). And do not hesitate to bring participants back to it! Time is a limited commodity and tangential discussions are a distraction and can derail a workshop very quickly. Be respectful but firm on why we are there.

First n foremost, one should know WHY IS THE WORKSHOP ENVISAGED AND WHO ARE THE PARTICIPANTS. After gathering information on these two parameters, the program should be so designed that the course meets the desired goal and also as per the knowledge n skill level of the participants. During the course of the program, all the participants should be encouraged to ask questions so that the presenter is able to gauge their understanding and based on requirements change the pace or line of presentation to meet the desired goal. There should be provision of feedback and post program assessment for all the participants. This will highlight the level of understanding of the participants and yardstick of measurement of the efficiency of presenter.
