How can you align your personal brand with your team's values?

Your personal brand is more than just a catchy slogan or logo, it's about being genuine and authentic every day while remaining faithful to your core values.

What a coincidence! Just this morning I was talking to a group of mid-level Managers about how they can influence their peers, co-workers and work environment, but from the Leadership perspective. A Leader creates a "personal brand" not only by doing the right things, but because other people believe it to, and decide to "follow" that Brand. However, you need to be coherent and authentic, and look for ways to grow and improve your brand. Otherwise if their is a newer, stronger and more "attractive brand" (message, behavior, value, etc.) your Brand will start losing followers. Challenge: how do you maintain your "personal brand" fresh and creating value for you?

Authenticity is crucial here. I recommend coming up with a team "core value" document, one that is live and open to change/improvement. Once you collectively design this, use it to align your actions and processes and add value to everything you do. Ideally, your personal brand and team values shouldn't mismatch, as this is one of the preconditions of building both your brand and an elite team.

One thing in leadership that I've found to be crucial is to show genuine interest in each one of your team members. It is very important to take the time to get to know the people in your charge, and then in return they will want to get to know you. There is no time more valuable then the time you spend showing interest in each individual on your team. Communication is key, but effective communication works much better when each person has developed a vested interest in one another.

A personal brand is the unique combination of skills, experiences, and qualities that define an individual and set them apart from others. It encompasses their reputation, values, and the way they present themselves to the world. It is how they are perceived by others and the impression they leave behind. A strong personal brand can help individuals stand out, build credibility, and attract opportunities that align with their goals and values.

Encouraging everyone to have their own personal brand and knowing your own personal brand matters for team building because it promotes individuality, self-awareness, and collaboration. When team members have a clear understanding of their personal brand, they can bring their unique strengths and perspectives to the team. This fosters a sense of ownership, creativity, and innovation. Additionally, when team members understand and respect each other's personal brands, it creates a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone's contributions are valued. This leads to stronger collaboration, effective communication, and ultimately, better team performance.

In my experience, how you integrate your personal brand into a team’s can make or break the effectiveness of the team. When there’s a culture of trust, the team buys-in to the work so that everyone feels success. If there’s no trust or if the team feels unseen, the quality of work along with the level of productivity will take a hit.

A culture of trust serves as a platform for other corporate culture as it keeps the team bonded and give a sense of 'family' where every team member seeks the good of one another without any unnecessary competition to outdo one another. The success of the team is the success of everyone. A leader must constantly demonstrate and reaffirm that everyone in the team has a voice that must heard.

Your personal brand matters to attract high skill team members from competition. The stronger the person brand, the better team members you get. Also, this helps in retaining the team members.

Aligning one's personal brand with team values fosters a cohesive work environment, enhancing team building within an organization. When individuals resonate with shared values, it creates a unified culture, fostering collaboration and trust among team members. What do people say or how do they talk about you when you're not in the room? I've found Start, Stop, Continue sessions facilitated by HR without the leader present to be an effective way to gather honest feedback from team members. In addition, I have a weekly recurring 20-minute calendar block on Fridays to reflect on the week and gut-check that I'm living into my values. There have been times where I didn't show up in a situation the way I wanted to, and it has been helpful to reflect and learn from those experiences so that I can intentionally model my values.

I created my personal mission statement about 10 years ago. Is it good? Is it true? Does it matter? If not, disregard. It’s is an ideal but it’s amazing how simple these rules make my life today. I’ve spent the last three years grinding out a software startup. I’ve always said that if we act intentionally with honesty we can’t get in too much trouble that we can’t get out of. I didn’t realize how important these rules would be to keeping my company moving forward in spite of all the crazy interpersonal activities that go on.

When assessing your personal brand it’s important to evaluate your teams values to see if there is a fit. Self assessment will help when evaluating your own strengths and weaknesses.

Are you always on time? Can the team trust you? Are you satisfied with your efforts towards the team goals? These questions should be answered truthfully and constantly to asses your personal brand.

Often how you perceive yourself is very different from how the team perceives you. Hence it is important from time to time to hold the mirror to reflect on yourself, your values, purpose and more importantly be open to change. Feedback sessions from your peers, colleagues, and the team are always helpful to access and improve your personal brand. It is essential to track your progress and define your objectives and be consistent with what you portray online and offline.

True values transcend words on posters or text in training manuals. As leaders, it’s our responsibility to embody the core values, demonstrating their essence by our own actions and words. By setting ourselves as examples of the core values, we can better evaluate our team via the reflection of our leadership found within the team’s actions. Establishing a safe environment where transparent and honest communication flows both from leadership to the team and vice versa is crucial in this arena.

Name of the game here is: team engagement. creating a safe and respectful space for your team members to share their values, such as a workshop, survey, one-on-one conversation will be always considered & appreciated from the majority.

To asses your team values you have a clear view of your company vision and goal. Based on that you have to stablish your values , vision and goals.

Continues check-ins with your team members to see how they are doing, where they are finding diffulty and how you can support them.

First and foremost, you should define your personal values before your company defines them for you. Your personal values will help develop and establish your personal brand. Over time, your team and others will notice your authenticity and consistency, which will build trust. You can then leverage that trust to build strong alignment with your overall team and help them further define their personal values.

It starts with you as the leader, first. It’s about identifying your “why”, your motivating factor and your guiding principle. It’s important to have that clearly defined as this will set the tone for the culture within your team. Your team will operate and watch how you do business with other colleagues, vendors, and other people outside of the organization. By being authentic, you set the tone for what kind of group this will be. After your “why” is defined and demonstrated, it is time to live those values and model it, “walk the walk.”

Once that's clear, the second step is to identify the areas where your personal values align with the team's values. The best way of knowing whether we are doing a good job is seeking feedback! It's so important to rely on feedback to identify areas for improvement and refine your approach to personal branding.

I recently attended a presentation in Austin that commented on how founders can be so intertwined with their business brand that they fail to highlight their own self. The theme was that the audience wants that, they want to hear more about how people grew to what they are now; especially if they are seen as "successful." As it relates to the engagement with our audience we may do well to work at finding time or hiring the right team to help us in highlighting our personal authentic self outside of the role/startup/firm that we work for. The challenge here is to take what we learn from our own personal experiences and relate them in a way that aligns with the business without being mute of our personal tone and self. Cheers!

I think first of all, the team should focus on aligning with the organisation 's core values . Teams should clearly understand the core values and how they practice those in day to day work. Team can brainstorm together to create ways of working document which should align with core values.if we feel any adjustment is required in our personal brand or ways of working, we should try to adapt and change. WoW document should be reviewed and updated to make sure all team members are aligned with common values.

Building a culture where everyone feels comfortable sharing ideas is crucial. I've found that setting up skip-level chats, whether with leaders or peers, adds a personal touch, showing the team that their input matters. It's not just about talking the talk of a good culture; it's about walking the walk through your personal brand and the action you take to promote it.

To align your personal brand with your team's values, understand the team's values, find common ground, communicate openly, collaborate effectively, lead by example, and be open to learning and adapting. This fosters a cohesive work environment where everyone's personal brands align with the team's goals and values.

I would add that being a mentor and mentee are important parts of your development centred around self-awareness and being a great role model. I found that Lessons derived from these conversations outside of the direct work situations adds to broaden your values and then you can share with your team mates the insights that you have gained. This starts the flywheel and eco-systems of open and comfortable conversations with the objective of making everyone better-individually as well as the team dynamic.

Maintaining your personal brand and your team's values requires ongoing effort and consistent alignment between individual actions and the team's overall principles. It's very important to do a regular self-reflection to ensures that your actions remain consistent with your personal brand and the team's principles. Another key aspect is demonstrating consistency: Maintain consistency in your actions and communication, ensuring that your behavior aligns with your personal brand and the team's values. This consistency reinforces your credibility and reinforces the team's culture.

Maintaining personal brand requires consistent adaptation, growth, and a never ending goal to get better. Nothing changes if nothing changes.

There are 2 sets of team values, those espoused publicly & those that unspoken. If they are out of synch, as a leader, you must bring them into alignment. Until these are the same, no amount of work on personal brand with team members will be successful. If they are in synch, then look at team members' strengths & help them see where they contribute to success, encouraging them to promote those skills/attributes when interacting with internal/external customers.

In the end I would say alignment between your personal brand and your team's values is an ongoing process. It requires continuous self-reflection, open communication, and a willingness to adapt. By doing so, you can create a strong personal brand that resonates with your team and contributes to a positive and cohesive work environment.

So how would a leader align their personal brand with their team values? Perhaps a valuable team exercise would be beneficial by having each member of the team share their personal brand. From here we can identify all our similarities and differences. Moving forward we can define as a team what our team values are. This exercise would allow for a deeper understanding of each other, create an appreciation for each other, and establish a solid foundation for communication. In doing this as a team each member including the leader can be their authentic self while honoring the team as a collective resulting in our personal branding to align with our team values.

Encourage open dialogue within the team to address any discrepancies between individual brands and team values. Foster an environment where diversity of personal brands enhances, rather than conflicts with, the team's collective identity. Regularly revisit and refine the team's values and ensure they are integrated into everyday practices and decision-making processes.
