From my own experience it is cruitial for the relationship between business and R&D colleagues to have an open discussion between what the customer wants, but also what is feasible in the lab. The worst thing for project management is to have moving targets. Therefore, all stakeholders INCLUDING the customer needs to agree on the product requirements very early in the project. What also helps is to explain the bigger picture - Why do we need this product - Where is the market and trends heading - How is this new product answering these needs Invole the R&D colleagues in important discussions with the customer, e.g. when the requirements are being fixed and make sure your colleagues also visit the customer line to better understand.
In R&D, thinking outside the box is essential, especially when it comes to conflict resolution. Engage stakeholders in brainstorming sessions to find creative solutions that satisfy everyone's needs.
