Everyone has to start somewhere, luckily for an IT professional, you’d have a leg up. To keep the momentum, start with foundational cybersecurity courses or learning materials to grasp essential concepts like data protection, encryption, and common cyber threats.

When it comes to starting the learning process, it's not just about learning the basics, it's about building a good foundation and finding the right places to learn from. I've met plenty of cyber people who are filled with misconceptions, incorrect information, etc because they dive in without making a plan first. Don't just take your advice from any stranger on YouTube or LinkedIn, find experts in the field, who are actively doing the work, and then ask them kindly what you should be learning. There is no substitute for experience-driven advice. Make a plan for your learning based on the advice you receive, and THEN hit the ground running.

There are several sources of information you can leverage on, some of them are blogs, newsletters, websites of security vendors, chatgpt etc.. this is important as you progress in your journey to becoming an engineer. This gives you valid and paid relevant information to stay abreast of the ever changing threat landscape.

In order to secure a network, you have to know a little about networking in general, it will never hurt to keep building on your networking skills. To start, you can focus on understanding network architecture, ports, protocols, and secure configuration practices. Networking is a large tree with many branches, take your time getting familiar with them and it will make learning cybersecurity easier as a whole.

Be a lifelong learner when it comes to technology. No one can know everything about everything, but pick one or two things, like networking and take some classes. Study for Network +, or Cisco Networking. Even if you do not get certified the learning is what is important. Also again get some practical hands on experience, running wires, terminating ends, troubleshooting connection issues. Be mentored by other network techs and admins and ask lots of questions.

Next up is to surround yourself with people in this space, you are who you spend time with. So if you spend time with a bunch of cybersecurity people, you are bound to be more up-to-date, than someone who doesn't. Lastly, follow cybersecurity people on LinkedIn and any other social media platform you use. Bonus Tip: Use an RSS aggregator app to create a personal cybersecurity Newsletter.

This is important. Stay updated, by subscribing to tech newsletters and groups. Be involved in an ISC2 or other cyber security local chapters to meet and network with other peers and learn. You cannot do it all, but learning some here and there can help rather than not being involved.
