Embarking on a journey toward thought leadership is akin to navigating uncharted waters. It demands a strategic approach, lest you find yourself adrift in a sea of uncertainty. Without proper planning, the transition into a thought leadership role can be fraught with challenges that may compromise your credibility and impact. In this article, you'll discover key strategies to smoothly sail into your new role, ensuring that your voyage toward becoming a thought leader is both successful and fulfilling.
Before you set sail on your thought leadership journey, it's vital to chart the potential risks. Consider the implications of being wrong publicly, as thought leaders often take bold stances. Reflect on your niche's stability and how shifts could affect your relevance. Evaluate your current network's strength and whether it can support and amplify your voice. Acknowledge that your personal brand will be under scrutiny, and missteps can have lasting repercussions. By anticipating these risks, you can develop a contingency plan that will help you maintain your course even in turbulent waters.

First and foremost assess the risk of *NOT* taking this risk: 1. Staying stuck and lack of growth 2. Missing out on opportunities 3. Falling behind while others get ahead 4. Becoming irrelevant 5. Miss out on important lessons. 6. Lack of innovative ideas. 7. Safe choices = smaller gains

From my perspective, embarking on a thought leadership journey involves careful risk assessment. In my experience, public scrutiny is inevitable, and even small missteps can have lasting impacts on your personal brand. I remember a time when a bold stance I took was met with unexpected backlash, which taught me the importance of having a contingency plan. Evaluating your network's strength is also crucial—having a supportive network can amplify your voice and help navigate turbulent times.

Becoming a thought-leader is more gratifying and far less risky when those you lead and know you best (clients, customers, investors, readers, co-collaborators, employers, media, etc.) lift you to a position of thought #leadership. The support and endorsement of people with first-hand knowledge of your expertise and accuracy in being early or first-to-market with a concept or solution can help build trust with those who don’t know you, yet.

I find this a funny step. I realise it is talking about work-related expertise, but it is almost like saying you should have a backup plan for your opinions, passion, or leadership thoughts! If we acknowledge that we do not know everything and have conversations with the people who disagree, then surely that is enough to establish our growth mindset and ability to have discourse as a thought leader. Maybe the risk is that if you do not want to have these discussions and disagreements, you should not be online as a thought leader. The premise is "thought" and therefore is inherently about discourse...no? If we maintain respect and kindness in all engagements and then we can create a more positive response to the missteps or conflicts...
Transitioning to thought leadership requires a solid foundation of credibility. Start by honing your expertise in a specific area; depth of knowledge is more critical than breadth when establishing authority. Engage with your community through meaningful dialogue, not just broadcasting your views. Be consistent in your messaging and ensure it aligns with your core values. Remember, trust is the currency of thought leadership, and it's earned over time through authenticity, integrity, and valuable insights.

There are 3 key elements to building credibility: 1. Be who you are, unapologetically. The more authentic you are to your values, the more passionate you are likely to be and credibility shines through. 2. Be honest, worthy of people’s trust, and respect concerns or hesitancy of people just getting to know you with patience and kindness. Nurture a trusted relationship. 3. Do what you love. Passion is palpable from people who are genuinely invested in what they are doing. Align work with goals and values. Do what you love to do, and you will never “work” another day on your life! Bonus: Be the kind of person you want to attract.

I slowed down my content creation for a few weeks while delivering events, and the impact on LinkedIn was palpable, an immediate drop in profile views. But that is okay. I am aware that consistency is key and if you choose the topics that matter to you and you love to speak about then it will be much easier to be consistent in content creation. That is why I will drop in with more authentic content when I feel inspired. ;-)
