While everyone agrees that adapting quickly is important and everyone is keen talking about agile approaches, this also needs some structure and assertiveness. Adapting quickly, but where to? An answer are "structured experiments". This means to define upfront WHAT to test (a specific technology, a market segment, a career opportunity), then to define HOW to test, then to run the experiment and finally to adapt. Even if the experiment failed, you will have thought about an adapted direction before the experiment and are capable to run the next one. If you are combining this with agile approaches, such as with short sprints and continuous customer feedback, you are well prepared to travel the R&D product career path successfully.
