My pat answer to a question I don't know the answer to is "I don't know, let's go find out." It admits to being human, but also shows a willingness to solve the problem.

If you don't know the answer describe what ways you can discover the answer. Be calm and be honest with the individual and let the user know that you both can work as a team to solve the issue. Put aside your ego and make it a learning lesson for both of you. You can also consult your colleagues as well to help assist you in the problem, if you don't know the issue. You can also redirect users to the individual who might know the answer.

staying calm and understanding the situation is really important not just during the interview but while you are on a job site. and it doesn’t just relate to computer industry but all of them instead. panicking makes you confuse things up and even if you are doing something simple you can end up making it a mess. if you find yourself panicking or even confused just step away for a second and take a deep breath and start thinking again about the situation from start with a fresh perspective

Take a step back, if you're unsure about how to answer a question there is no shame in asking for a moment to think about it, or to come back to it at a later point in the interview. If it's a technical question you just don't know the answer to, honesty is your best policy and employers will respect your ability to recognize areas to learn. One way to spin "I don't know" in your favor could be "I'm unsure but I look forward to learning the answers to these questions with this company." Remember to be confident, not arrogant.

If I don't know the answer to an interview question, I'm the first to admit it. Then I would explain that if this situation occurred in the work environment, I would revert to my resources, notes, and knowledge bases to find the answer. When I first started in IT, I was being trained by a systems admin and he gave me advice that has always stuck with me. He said, "There's no way an IT admin can know everything. Google is your friend if you don't know the answer or fix." In other words, don't fake it if you don't know the answer or a fix. There is no shame in looking up a solution or answer to a question.

When interviewing for my current position there were two questions I was asked that I was unable to immediately answer. The first I simply drew a blank but knew the answer, so I admitted that to the panel. I was able to recall the proper answer before the end of the interview and show that I did know. Later I was advised this showed honesty and humility by admitting my lack of knowledge.

Honesty is always the best policy. An employer finding out you are a liar from day one reflects worse on you than admitting you do not know. Instead, show curiosity about the problem and how you would go about finding the answer. Odds are pretty good you are not the first person to face said issue. If a manufacturer's knowledge base does not address the issue, contact their support team. Also, industry peers are a great resource. You never know who might have already found a solution. An employer who sees genuine curiosity and willingness to learn knows they are getting an employee willing to grow and adapt as the company grows and adapts.

The second question I honestly did not know, but advised them when faced with a situation like this, I know how to research the answer. Within 15 minutes of the end of the interview, I emailed the entire panel with the proper answer and links to where more info could be gained. I was later advised that not only did my persistence impress them, but it gave them a real-world example of my ability to adapt and research.

One thing I’ve found extremely helpful, is to smile , and in the split second that the questions are being asked . I think about the biggest accomplishments I’ve experience and speak of that with confidence and how it was completed. This has always helped me gain confidence in the middle of it all

You can always train an employee to fill knowledge gaps, but you cannot make someone honest or humble. Teams succeed or fail together, and a willingness to admit those knowledge gaps is the only way for the team's knowledge to grow. I have learned so much in my approaching 20 years of IT simply by helping someone else find the answers to something they were needing.
