Always keep your ears open & listen actively without being judgemental in your thoughts. This is also applicable when you're talking to others about yourself. Be open to feedback and seek it proactively from both your seniors and juniors. This is the best way to understand how you others are perceiving you and thus paves the way for improvement. You can also record your presentations and then share these with your superiors and request them to highlight what was good and what can be improved. Being open to feedback will encourage others to be honest with you and this honesty & trust is the building block for a stronger relationship with them.

No matter if superiors, peers, direct reports or any colleague, building up good relationships will help you as well as company you are working for. After all, we all have different skill sets and knowledge even if the position title is the same. So, appreciating diversity by all means and the little effort to be friendly, supportive and respectful is one key to be successful and to make you feel valued and happy in your job. I do not understand the phrasing "to advance your career" in the main title of the article. Fostering good relations not only about career progress! Why would you behave differently to the floor cleaner, your peer or your CEO???
