I am always of the opinion that no question is stupid. I always ask questions on set but it doesn't end there, I go home and do more research on the question I asked, that way I understand way more. It's beyond proving to your mentors that you are eager to learn, it is for personal growth also.

It’s been a few years, but one thing I know, for a fact was that I learned a lot more by asking questions than I did blindly following what they had me do. Every new skill that was unlocked, every new project I got to do and gain experience with was directly linked to a question I asked, or a thing I observed and requested involvement in. Especially when you’re an intern and you’re still malleable, they are more willing to teach you as they work. This is what the internship is meant to do, so if you’re not getting this out of your internship, go find one that will give that to you.

Like a child, always try to ask 'why'. Understand the rationale behind each decision, then explain it back in your own words to make sure you've understood correctly. Whenever you try to explain something in simple terms, you'll learn exactly how little you understand it. Remember to reward your teacher by showing your enthusiasm and excitement. As an expert, I am encouraged to teach those who appear to be very interested as it gives me a sense of achievement and progress. On set, you may sometimes be the least qualified person there, so remember that you can still make a big contribution through your positive energy, curiosity, and can-do attitude to help wherever possible.

Work your way up, or vice versa. Depending on the department you are at, set yourself goals to make friends with either the director or producer, down to the production assistant. I started as a production assistant on set, and made a ton of friends that gave me opportunities in so many other departments. Trick is to find the influencer within the group, and be on their good side. They can help you sway opinions and guide you in the right direction to talk to the right people. Just don't be manipulative or toxic...

When on set, actively listen to everything, talk to everyone, be present and aware of what is happening, when it's happening, who's happening, how it's happening, and most importantly why it needs to happen. You can then interpret that knowledge in your brain and understand fully how a set is run.

Don't ask for permission, ask for forgiveness. So in everything that you do, don't ask for permission for feedback, just ask! And if people don't have the time to give it, a simple "sorry another time then" can work. But when seeking out constructive feedback, have specific constructive questions so that you can lead and guide people to giving you proper answers. Asking things like "Anything I can do to improve" is vague af and not helpful. Instead ask "during that scene/event, could I have been helpful by ABC to accomplish XYZ? What are your thoughts on that?" That's better ;)

Nach Abschluss von Aufgaben oder Projekten während deines Praktikums ist es wichtig, darüber nachzudenken, was gut gelaufen ist und was verbessert werden könnte. Don't meditate and become weird. Just look back at certain situations on set and ask yourself how things went, what could have been done better, and moving forward how can you improve. The good, bad, ugly. This helps reinforce your learnings and make you a better production person on set (and human being in general)

Don't just work on one set and self-proclaim that you're a production guru. Jump from different sets and different genre's of production to learn, absorb, apply, and reinforce. The learning never stops!

Video producers often make the mistake of falling in love with their work and becoming complaisant.
