one of the few instances where mere https for webservices is not good enough.. given that the nature of possible data transmit to include both trade, PII and trend detectable ones in both API and Webtraffic. Hence, I recommend establishing a secure tunnel over https, with two way verification. Further I also recommend setting up graded internal organization level key infrastructure with x509 issuing authority and use private x509 certificates issued to recognize end devices (example employee notebook and smart phones etc). These leaf certificates must be cross signed for disaster recovery plus fully revocable without any extensive outage at various levels.
