In the end analysis, alignment of interest is the most critical thing to working constructively with others. In order to achieve this we must actively listen, and truly understand the interest, needs, and desires of the people we are working with. We then must check in on an interval basis to ensure that the alignment persists over time. I have built a system that takes in all forms of updates from portfolio companies - quantitatively and qualitatively. In other words, the numbers and the story. Standardizing KPIs and categories (such as Business Development, Product, Technology, etc) not only help with monitoring progress, but also with check-in meetings where each side can share progress since the last meeting and identify action items. Typical KPIs include burn, runway, and headcount. Revenue-focused metrics include MRR (monthly recurring revenue), ARR (annual recurring revenue), and ACVs (average contract values).

As entrepreneurs are very focused on the day to day, it can be difficult for them to step back and see "the forest from the trees". As investors, it’s our responsibility to create time to discuss risk management! Our goal should be to establish a shared understanding of potential risks and develop mitigation plans. It’s crucial for us as investing partners to maintain open lines of communication on this topic.

Red team time! Nothing is better than taking the other side of risk and trying to "attack" or take down the systems that are setup. I use the following questions effectively; What would a competitor do to take us down? If our risk measures failed, why? What mitigation measures would we take it we had more time/money/resources? Risk is also about return - there is an asymmetric return profile associated with startups and while the risk is high the return warrants it (or should). Finally I also love; what is your moat? How much money, time, and energy would it take for someone to "catch up" to where you are? That is your moat because by the time they "do" you are already ahead.

Clarity, alignment and transparency on exits is key and the conversations should start before you invest. For investors to show up as consistent and in service to the business, it is key for founding teams and management to have clarity and alignment on your exit plans. The investor exits plans will influence control rights, follow on capital, whether they value growth, capital effeciency, free cash generation. It is important investors and management are aligned on the game everyone is playing and then work together on building a business that can exit, which in most cases is crafting something someone else wants to buy

To understand the potential routes to exit from the companies you invest in is a must; expecting to have a say in it sounds a bit ambitious, unless your found has worrying concentration issues or a takeover-style share in the invested companies. More important than exit is a trajectory - that would allow the fund to either participate in the portfolio success, or divest once an investment goal was achieved.

In addition to the traditional aspects of managing portfolio companies, consider fostering a culture of continuous learning and adaptation. Encourage portfolio companies to stay agile, continually reassess their strategies, and adapt to changing market conditions.
