One of the things about problem-solving is that it is not an industry-specific skill. Harnessing and advancing your problem-solving skills can help you in a multitude of roles, not just in IT roles. One of the most useful skills for any problem solver is the ability to follow a troubleshooting process such as: Identify the Problem, Theorize a Solution, Implement the Solution, and if necessary, enact preventative measures so the problem does not come back. The other thing, especially with IT Troubleshooting, is that you should try to document your findings, the steps you took, the troubleshooting you've done, and the results of the problem once it has been solved. This will make it much easier in the future to solve similar problems.

I would break it down as follows. 51 percent solving the technical problem 49 percent managing the customers experience and making sure that they are respected and validated throughout the process. For some people this may actually be more important to them than technical skills as long as you are able to get the problem solved. Your ability to propose and explain work around's is critical if the problem can't be solved immediately. There may be many solutions to the problem. Explaining this to the customer and helping them find the one they like best as opposed to the one someone with superior technical skills threw in their face will win the day every time.
