Palmer, Richard Harley
passed away, Saturday, June 29, 2024 at the age of 89. Beloved husband for 67 years of Mariette Palmer (nee Schemmer), whom he met at the age of 15; son of the late Marjorie Palmer (nee Dickson) and Charles F. Palmer; stepson of the late Dario Carbone; brother of Patricia Bywater, Stuart Palmer, the late Charles F. Palmer III and Charlene Palmer; our dear uncle, great-uncle and friend of many.
Dick at 5'9" was the Missouri State High Jumping Champion, clearing the bar at 6'4" doing the Fosbury Flop. Henry E. Schemmer, his future father-in-law, was his coach.
He graduated from the University of Missouri with three degrees in engineering. He worked at McDonald Douglas until he joined the Navy as a Lieutenant jg. serving under Captain Preston at Cubi Point, Philippines where he blew up all obsolete World War II quonset huts and built a photo lab. He was honorably discharged with an excellent progress report.
Dick worked at Ernst and Ernst in St. Louis as a consultant, he then worked at Western Textile Products Company as manager for twenty-seven years under his beloved president, Jake Van Dyke.
Dick and Mariette were active in local politics, creating the present-day City of Town and Country, leading to the establishment of other municipalities throughout Missouri.
Dick was beloved by many friends who visited him in his final days.

I am heartbroken by the loss of Uncle Dick. When his brother, our father died, he stepped in to be a constant presence in our life, even from a distance. Whether it was his sage advice for our latest problems or just great conversations about the state of the world, he was always there for us. I do miss the conversations we would have - spending an hour on the phone like it was 10 minutes. He showed his love for his family in different ways but you always knew. He will be missed by me and many others. Love you Uncle Dick.

Dickie, your very best talent was always to smile and remain quiet when Mariette and her friends - including me - were planning some outrageous activity to undercut the dastardly policies of our town council!! You offered wisdom and insight when asked; otherwise, you simply made sure that Mariette would always be safe and sound. You were a true gentleman and a tremendously loyal friend. And, most importantly, you were Mariette's soulmate. I know you will continue to watch over her in the years to come, until you are both together again.

Dick was a close and loyal friend and business associate for many years. He surged with optimism and lit up any room he entered. Dick was an accomplished business guru and innovative thinker. Yet, even with all of his achievements, the one feat that most awed him was his wife Mariette’s 4.0 G.P.A. while attending Mizzou. He will be sorely missed.

Dick was both a very great friend and a wonderful business partner. His wit, wisdom and optimism were contagious to all. He just loved people and was always interested in others and helping them if he could. Many was the time that he would stop to chat, joke and share stories with others when we were out and about. I believe he was a blessing to all who knew him, especially me. It was one of the highlights of my life to have known him.

Dick was a wonderful friend to me and many others. He was a good man, and even though he was not a believer, he was a far better man than many believers I know. He led by example and meant what he said. A rare commodity today.
