NICHOLAS ZOULLAS Obituary

ZOULLAS--Nicholas S.,
passed away peacefully Christmas week in New York at the age of 84. Nicholas Zoullas was born in Athens, Greece in 1937. His family managed to survive the turmoil of World War II and subsequent anarchy. In 1947, he emigrated with his family to New York and academically excelled, attending The Browning School, Groton School, Harvard College, and Harvard Law School. He started his brief legal career at the maritime firm of Burlingham, Underwood and Lord, before joining his father to help run the family's shipping office, eventually becoming president of Norland Shipping & Trading Corporation. Nicholas' involvement in shipping spanned over 40 years, during which he was a member of the American Bureau of Shipping and the American Society of Naval Architects. Over several decades, Nicholas' true passion was art. Zoullas' grandfather, Athanasios Rousopoulos, was a noted archeologist. In the 1980's, Nicholas began to collect Greek antiquities. Dietrich von Bothmer, a close friend and head of the Greek and Roman Department of the Metropolitan Museum of Art for over 30 years, helped Nicholas put together a notable collection of ancient Greek artifacts. Over his lifetime, he was a huge supporter of the Greek Orthodox Church and served as a member of various committees of Harvard University, a co-chairman of the Visiting Committee of the Greek and Roman Department of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, a member of the Visiting Committee of the Classical Department of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, a member of the Board of Directors of the American Hospital in Paris Foundation, a director of the Seaman's Institute, president of the Foundation for Depression and Manic Depression, and co- founder and board member of the VZV Foundation. Nicholas is mourned by his sister, Catia Chapin, and his sons, Sophocles and Alexis Zoullas and their respective families.
