Institutional Review Board definition

Institutional Review Board or “IRB” means, in accordance with 45 C.F.R. Part 46, 21 C.F.R. part 56, and other applicable regulations, an independent body comprising medical, scientific, and nonscientific members, whose responsibility is to ensure the protection of the rights, safety, and well-being of the Human Subjects involved in a study.

Institutional Review Board. – means any board, committee or other group that is both:
Institutional Review Board means a committee composed of investigators, lay representatives, and legal counsel, which is established at each institution of higher learning and each nonprofit research institution receiving funds from a health research project, for the express purpose of determining the appropriateness of any research involving human subjects;
Institutional Review Board means a board, committee, or other group formally designated by an institution and approved by the national institutes of health, office for protection from research risks, to review, approve the initiation of, and conduct periodic review of biomedical research involving human subjects. “Institutional review board” means the same as “institutional review committee” as used in section 520(g) of the federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, as codified in 21 U.S.C. §301 et seq.
