Crews have shut down a busy section of Milwaukee Avenue in downtown Libertyville as they begin a more than week-long project to repair a railroad crossing.

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) said Metra repairs have begun on Milwaukee Avenue, also known as Route 21, north of Lake Street.

Metra is repairing the deteriorated at-grade railroad crossing, village officials said.

The project requires the full closure of Milwaukee Avenue at the crossing.

Crews implemented the road closure Monday morning.

They are expected to complete the project and reopen the roadway, weather permitting, at 7 a.m. on July 18, according to IDOT.

The posted vehicle detour route for northbound traffic on Milwaukee Avenue is to proceed west on Route 176, north on Butterfield Road, east on Winchester Road and back to Milwaukee Avenue.

In a separate project occurring nearby, the Libertyville Township Road District will be replacing the Oak Spring Road Bridge over the Des Plaines River.

Oak Spring Road was shut down on Monday at the Des Plaines River crossing.

The closure will occur until the summer of 2025. Motorists needing to cross the Des Plaines River in this area are encouraged to do so by detouring to Route 176.
