Boone County, Mo., Fire Protection District assistant fire chief dies during swift water rescue attempt

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KY3) - The Boone County Fire Protection District announced Monday morning Assistant Chief Mathew Tobben died while assisting in a swift water rescue operation.

According to Fire Chief Scott Olsen, Chief Tobben assisted the Columbia Fire Department during a swift water rescue operation at Rangeline Street and Bear Creek early Monday morning.

The firefighters had rescued two people when the Zodiak boat overturned. It threw Chief Tobben from the boat where he drowned. Firefighters rescued the Columbia firefighter and the original two victims.
