LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - Deputies have arrested a Lake Charles man who they said has been burglarizing police vehicles for months.

Dewayne E. Davis, 27, is behind multiple burglaries of marked and unmarked police vehicles, according to the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office. He reportedly broke the windows and stole guns and other equipment. Deputies said they spoke with Davis on July 3 and he confirmed he was responsible for some of the burglaries.

“He went out casing neighborhoods trying to locate police vehicles whether they were marked or unmarked. He went back during the early morning hours. He’d actually break the windows in the vehicles and crawl in and rumble through and seized whatever he could seize,” Sherrif Stitch Guillory said.

After executing several search warrants, deputies said they found burglary tools, seven firearms, three of which were listed as stolen, over 1,000 rounds of ammunition, handcuffs, and body armor.

“After making a vehicle stop, we did several searches on different residents and this is what we were able to recover, these are the items that were stolen,” Guillory said.

CPSO is investigating more than 20 cases since April, and the Lake Charles Police Department is also investigating numerous related burglaries.

“Something that is really disturbing to us is that he was specifically targeting law enforcement vehicles and stealing guns,” Guillory said.

Davis faces the following charges:

  • Illegal possession of a stolen firearm (7 counts)
  • Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon (7 counts)
  • Unlawful use of body armor (3 counts)
  • Theft of a firearm (2 counts)
  • Simple vehicle burglary
  • Theft less than $1,000
  • Simple criminal damage to property.

Deputies said Davis has a previous criminal history of burglary and theft.

According to deputies, Davis has sold many of the stolen guns, so anyone who has bought a gun from him is asked to contact them.

The investigations are ongoing. More charges and arrests are pending.
