NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The man accused of killing Callie Brunett and her 4-year-old daughter made his first appearance in federal court in New Orleans on Friday, June 28.

Daniel Callihan, 36, appeared before a magistrate judge where he was formally charged with kidnapping and transportation of a victim across state lines, according to his attorney, Kerry Cuccia. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 12.

Callihan was extradited from Madison County, Mississippi to Plaquemines Parish where he is being held under federal custody. The Plaquemines Parish Detention Center sometimes houses federal prisoners.

In Tangipahoa Parish, Callihan and his alleged accomplice, Victoria Cox, 32, were both charged with first-degree murder. The duo faces capital murder charges in Mississippi.

Officials in Louisiana have insisted that Callihan and Cox be tried in Louisiana first since the crimes originated in Tangipahoa Parish.

Brunett’s body was found stabbed multiple times in her Loranger home on Thursday, June 13. An AMBER Alert was issued for her two missing daughters, who were found hours later in a wooded area in Jackson, Mississippi. Her 4-year-old was found dead, of what officials believe was likely asphyxiation or suffocation, and her 6-year-old was found alive but injured in a nearby vehicle.

Callihan was taken into custody near where the girls were found. The police chief in Jackson described a horrific scene unfit for any father or law enforcement officer to witness.

A new federal criminal complaint lays out Callihan’s description, in brutal detail, of his alleged crimes.

Callihan allegedly told investigators he had stabbed Callie Brunett approximately 30 times in Loranger and had said he wanted to kill her for some time.

He also allegedly admitted he killed 4-year-old Erin Brunett and decided to keep her older sister as a “sex slave.”

The document suggests the murder of Erin was in Mississippi.

The complaint alleges two people told investigators they heard two children screaming from the woods behind a home near Jackson, where Callihan was found.

Shortly after, law enforcement found Erin Brunett’s body and her injured six-year-old sister live in a pit.

Callihan’s attorney says he’s set to appear for a preliminary hearing on July 12th.
