LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - Summer is approaching fast, and soon students will be done with the school year. If you’re looking for something to keep your kids or teens occupied, consider a summer camp.

Summer camps can provide children of all ages with fun experiences they won’t find anywhere else and teach them different skills to apply to the next school year and to life.

Calcasieu Parish

Mallard Golf Club Kids Clinic

The City of Lake Charles Partners in Parks Initiative and Mallard Golf Club are teaming up to offer a Junior Golf Clinic on Monday, June 3. This free clinic, geared towards children ages 6-14, will be held at Grace and Medora Park (2720 Medora St.) from 10 am – noon. Attendees will learn how to play golf from Mallard Golf Club’s PGA Professional, while participating in a number of fun activities and challenges. Golf clubs and other necessary supplies will be provided for use during the event.

Calcasieu Parish Public Library Summer Reading Program

There are four programs to fit you: Early literacy, summer reading, teen reading, and adult reading program.

Pre-registration is now open. Kids can start logging their books on May 24 to earn badges and rewards, and the program ends on July 12. Register online or use an existing account, and depending on the challenge log, your books/minutes to keep track of your progress, and collect badges.

Summer Exploration Adventures

Summer Exploration Adventures are open to children ages 5-10. Cost is $40 per week. Camps will be held Monday through Friday, June 3-July 26, from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Each week, campers will embark on a new adventure with weekly themes set to include the following: Community Super Heroes, Character Books, Aviation, Louisiana’s Animal Kingdom, Olympic Games, STEM, Performing Arts and Splish Splash. The City of Lake Charles Recreation and Parks Department will begin accepting registrations for the 2024 sessions HERE. Registration will be available online only through May 23, 2024.

Lake Area Adventures

Send your children to a summer camp that’s not miles away, but still PACKS in all the fun! This camp is ideal for ages 6 and up and includes indoor and outdoor activities, fun jump play, open swim, gamers lounge activities, and more! Sign up HERE.

Christian Youth Theater

Week-long musical theater days camps are offered during the summer months for students ages 4-18. Camps are designed to create a hands-on theater experience, and are focused on building performance skills, self-confidence, and teamwork.

Typical camps include team competitions, rotations through drama, dance, music, and craft workshops, a daily theme-related devotional, and an impressive concluding showcase for family and friends. Get more information and sign up HERE.

Camp Smiling F.A.C.E.S. 2024

Children with physical and mental challenges are invited to West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital’s Camp Smiling F.A.C.E.S. (Fishing, Arts-n-Crafts and Equestrian Skills) for a week of activities and fun. Challenges such as autism, spina bifida, down syndrome, cerebral palsy and others are often limiting, but at Camp Smiling F.A.C.E.S., campers can enjoy traditional summer camp activities in a safe, helpful and FUN environment.

Camp held from 8 a.m.-11 a.m. from June 3-6 at the Genesis Therapeutic Riding Center in Sulphur. For ages 4-12. Cost is $65. Registration deadline is Friday, May 10.

Branch Out Summer Art Camp

Imperial Calcasieu Museum announced registration is open! This year, they’re gearing up for an incredible journey into the world of creativity with two captivating themes: Calcasieu Critter and Re-useum. Branch Out is a dynamic summer art camp tailored for children who have completed grades K-8. Our immersive classes will explore a variety of artistic techniques, including drawing, painting, ceramics, shape & form, papercraft, and color theory. Led by certified teachers from the Calcasieu Parish School Board, each session promises a high-quality art education that fosters creativity and skill development.

The dates for Calcasieu Critter theme will be June 3-7, June 10-14, and June 17-21. The dates for Re-useum will be June 24-28, July 8-12, and July 15-19.

Almosta Ranch Summer Farm Horse Camp

Classes held through July for a variety of age groups and for children with special needs.

Campers will learn barn and horse chores, horse anatomy, grooming, tacking and riding. There will also be playing with farm animals and swimming in the “Almosta Lake” with zip line. Some campers will also be making goat milk ice cream.

Will Wade Basketball Camps

This June and July for all students entering grades K-9. An experienced coaching staff, led by Head Coach Will Wade, is committed to providing top-notch instruction in all aspects of the game. The campers will have the opportunity to learn new skills on and off the court, make life-long friends, and most importantly, have fun in a safe and supportive environment.

Camps held at McNeese Legacy Center and divided into sessions: For grades K-9, June 24-27 and July 15-18. Team Camp held June 14-15. Elite Camp held August 24. $225 per camper per session.

Lynn Kennedy Basketball Kids Day Camps

Designed to teach the ideas, techniques, fundamentals, attitude, and discipline to be successful in basketball and everyday life. For boys and girls going into grades K-8. Held from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on June 3-6, or June 17-20.

Cost is $244 per session.

The Children’s Theatre’s Summer Theater Camps

Introduce newcomers to the world of theatre and challenge young performing veterans to perfect advanced theatrical concepts and production techniques. Extreme Theatre for ages 8-18 June 10-14; WILD THINGS! for ages 5-8 July 8-10; KIDZ IN SHOWBIZ! for ages 5-18 July 22-26.

Camp ResQ SW Louisiana

Designed for high school girls to train alongside female firefighters and law enforcement officers from our area to learn police, firefighting and EMS skills. The camp also teaches defensive tactics, rescue training, 911 center, forensics, public surveillance and develops investigative skills. They will learn about the opportunities and challenges for women in these fields and the tools to tackle these professions head on.

This camp will train 20-24 high school girls and take place over the course of 5 days. The girls will train for 2 days at the police training center, 2 days at the fire training center and one day with medical, 911 and forensics.

Camp held July 15-19 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. daily. Scholarships may be available depending on sponsorship funds. Space is limited to the first 24. Deadline to register is June 15, 2024.

Region 5 Summer Camp Stempede

Future Engineers Camp for grades 1-8 from June 17-21; Vex Robotics Camp for grades 1-12 from June 3-7; Careers in STEM Camp for grades 1-5 from June 10-14; AI Energy Camp for grades 6-12 from June 10-14; Seaperch Underwater Robotics Camp for grades 6-12 from July 8-12; R5 NASA Astro Camp for grades 1-12 from July 22-26.

CanDance Summer Camp

Now accepting campers ages 4 and up. Camp dates are from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, June 10 - July 19. Held at the Dream Center at 1700 Ryan Street in Lake Charles. From dancing, themed parties, games, arts and crafts, to a dance showcase. Register HERE. $70 per week, and a $50 registration fee. Spots are limited. Painting with a Twist Summer Camp

Four summer camps for kids aged 7-12 will be held June 3-7, June 17-21, July 1-5, and July 15-19 from 9 a.m. to noon each day. Each week will be a different theme, including painting and activities. Cost is $250 per child for one week. Early bird discount is $200 per child. Sign up HERE.

Meek’s Kiddie Kollege Summer Camp

Held for kids ages 4-8 from 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. on May 27. Registration fee is $75. Includes music, dance, arts and crafts, and more. 400 N. Enterprise Blvd. in Lake Charles.

Summer of Service Initiative

The United Way of Southwest Louisiana will be offering three opportunities in June to allow teens 13 - 18 to contribute to their community while gaining valuable life skills. The opportunities include cleaning the Moss Bluff Senior Center on June 11, painting Oak Park Elementary School classrooms on June 18, and organizing a birthday celebration at the Moss Bluff Senior Center on June 28.

Loyola University music camps

The City of Lake Charles, in partnership with Loyola University New Orleans’ College of Music and Media, will host two one-week music camps this summer for 8th- through 12th-graders in low- to moderate-income households. Students will have an opportunity to learn about music and media through hands-on educational activities. Camps will be at McMillan Park from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the weeks of July 15 through 19 and July 29 through Aug. 2.

Beauregard Parish

DeRidder Fire Safety Camp

Three days of fun, learning, and essential fire safety training. Expect hands-on safety workshops, emergency response drills, interactive activities for all ages, and educational talks from fire safety experts. Will be held June 26-28, from 8 a.m. to 11:45 each day. Register at 1809 N. Pine St. in DeRidder.

South Beauregard Elite DeRidder Summer Session

7-week session for tumbling and cheer prep classes for all levels. One hour per week classes from June 3 - July 18.
