He returned to Germany to cover the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 2019 and for the 2021 federal parliament elections. In 2022, Lane spent a week in Poland reporting on Ukrainian refugees now living in Tyler's sister city. In 2023, he spent a week reporting from Cologne and Munich. Lane also traveled to France in June 2024 to cover the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasions in Normandy.

He currently serves as past president of the NSU Alumni Association and was honored as NSU's ‘Distinguished Young Alumnus of the Year’ in 2017. Lane also volunteers on the advisory committee for the NSU Department of New Media, Journalism, and Communication Arts and serves on the board of directors of the Beta Omicron Alumni Chapter and Housing Corporation.

He has also served on the faculty for numerous leadership conferences and mentored student leaders as Chapter Advisor for Pi Kappa Phi at the University of Texas at Tyler and at Stephen F. Austin State University.

Lane and his wife and daughter live in Tyler. He is active in his church and volunteers with several community organizations.

An avid photographer, one of Lane's passions is traveling to new destinations, capturing interesting shots of people and places along the way. He also loves spending time on the golf course.
