SMITH COUNTY, Texas (KLTV) - Smith County Emergency Management Coordinator Brandon Moore talks about preparing for Beryl.

Moore says to expect heavy rain, strong winds and possibly more storm damage. The county has begun moving rescue resources into the area, and first responders are on standby in case their help is needed.

“We have the headline of ‘turn around, don’t drown,’ and that’s the biggest thing,” Brandon said. “Especially at night. You don’t know how deep the water is; you don’t even know if there’s a road there, so don’t chance it.”

He said authorities are also prepared to respond to fires that may result from lightning or people trying to create light in their houses while the power is out.

“Just be cognizant of what you’re doing. Be careful of what you’re doing,” Brandon said.

Almost half of the counties in the State of Texas are already under a disaster declaration issued by Acting Governor Dan Patrick, including Smith County. Brandon said this authorizes officials to bring in additional resources.

“Be careful with the flooding; be careful with downed trees,” Brandon said. “Watch your speed on the road because, for instance, yesterday, there was a tree down on the loop just over the top of the hill and many people were nearly hitting it, so watch your speed.”
