LONGVIEW, Texas (KLTV) - The Gregg County Commissioners Court approved a tax contract and authorized a purchasing agent for the new Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 location.

The tax change will impact 15 East Mountain residents on the border of Gregg and Upshur counties. Gregg County Tax Assessor-Collector Michelle Terry said the aim is for those residents to receive one bill from Gregg County for their city and county taxes. Currently, they receive a county tax bill from Gregg County and a city tax bill from Upshur County.

East Mountain needs to approve the contract. If they sign on, the tax change will take effect on October 1.

The court also authorized a purchasing agent for the new Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 location. Gregg County Judge Bill Stoudt said the new location at 800 Gilmer Road will add 3,500 square feet and include tax, commissioner, and constable offices.

“We think it’s a better location, and it’s certainly better long term to service the public in precinct 2,” Stoudt added.

Gregg County is currently looking for an architect to build the new offices.

Stoudt said construction is expected to last between 12 to 15 months and at least $2 million.
