Bullard man who killed 10-year-old Kayla Gomez-Orozco kills self in prison
LOVELADY, Texas (KLTV) - The man serving a life sentence in prison for the 2016 death of 10-year-old Kayla Gomez-Orozco has killed himself.
According to a state report, Gustavo Zavala-Garcia, 31, of Bullard, was found unresponsive at the Wainwright Unit in Lovelady on July 2. The report states Zavala-Garcia was declared dead at 5:43 a.m.
The report lists suicide as the manner of death. The means of death lists “hanging, strangulation” and that he used a homemade ligature as a weapon.
Kayla went missing during a Nov. 1, 2016, prayer service at a church in Bullard. Her body was later found in a water well at Zavala-Garcia’s home on FM 2493.
In August 2019, Zavala-Garcia pleaded guilty to capital murder and was sentenced to life in prison.
