Kilgore, Tyler High have strong showings at state 7 on 7 tournament

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KLTV) - Pool play for Division II and Division III began on Thursday, and wrapped up Friday morning due to weather that forced a postponement.

The Kilgore Bulldogs began their pool play against Dallas Kimball and won that game 19-13. The Bulldogs faced Graham in their second game and took that one as well 19-14. Kilgore wrapped up pool play against Hamshire-Fannett with a 18-12 win and secure the one seed out of Pool H in Division II. Kilgore knocked off Lumberton in the opening round of bracket play 13-6. The Bulldogs continued their winning ways by getting a win over Alvarado 20-0 to advance to the quarterfinals. In the third round, Kilgore knocked off Lubbock Christian 26-25 to advance to the semifinals to face Hamshire-Fannett. In the semis, Hamshire-Fannett gave Kilgore their first loss in College Station, beating the Bulldogs 14-6 and advancing to the championship game against Dumas.

The Sabine Cardinals lost their first game of the day as they fell to Lubbock Christian 38-26. The Cardinals dropped their second game to Lake Dallas 34-14, and wrapped up pool play on Friday morning with a loss to Hitchcock 27-6. Sabine faced Mineral Wells in round one of the championship bracket. Mineral Wells won the game 21-0.

The Daingerfield Tigers went 2-1 in pool play. The Tigers fell to Millsap 14-8 to begin the day, but bounced back to pick up wins over Muleshoe, 20-19, and New Waverly, 21-20. The Tigers defeated Sonora in the first round of the Division III championship bracket 21-20. In the second round, the Tigers fell short and fell to Sunray 20-12.

The Harmony Eagles lost their first pool game to Gunter 34-8. The Eagles then fell to Roosevelt 28-20 and lost to Rice on Friday morning 14-0. Harmony faced Alpine in the first round of the championship bracket and fell to Alpine 7-6.

The Sandies of Grapeland went 2-1 in pool play. The Sandies fell to Honey Grove 14-12, but turned things around to beat Poth, 32-21, and Sunray, 19-13. Grapeland fell in the first round of the championship bracket 14-13 to Iraan.

The Tyler High Lions began pool play on Friday by beating McAllen Rowe 34-20. The Lions then took care of business against Randle winning 19-14 and completed an undefeated pool play by knocking off Mesquite Horn 34-20. Tyler went to the championship bracket of Division I where they would face the Allen Eagles in round one. Tyler knocked off Allen 21-20 to advance. In the second round, the Lions took on the Coppell Cowboys and would pull out the victory winning 19-16 to advance to the third round. In the third round, the Lions faced the DeSoto Eagles, and would fall 21-14. DeSoto would go on to win the championship for Division I.
