GRAYSON COUNTY, Texas (KXII) - A sudden storm hit Lake Texoma leaving a family in the waves of tragedy Wednesday evening.

Texas State Game Warden, Darron Blackerby, said a personal fishing boat capsized near Jupiter Point and Sherwood Shores.

“I think it’s about a 19-20-foot center console boat that had four adults and four kids on it,” Blackerby said.

A five-year-old boy was missing but once emergency responders were able to turn the boat over, they found him stuck under the boat.

In videos from witnesses, Donald and Fanny Bragg, you can hear the moment authorities find him as they say ‘We’ve got a kid’.

“The parents had a lifejacket on him, which is outstanding,” Blackerby said, “But I did hear that he was actually entangled in the ropes.”

Blackerby said the child was transported to Texoma Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Everyone on board wore a life jacket and no other injuries were reported.

Blackerby says the boaters were trying to get out of the storm when the boat overturned.

“I’d rather people be upset because their day got cut short than actually get caught up in one of these summer storms that occasionally pops up,” Blackerby said.

He adds lake goers should always check the forecast before hitting the water.

If a storm does happen unexpectedly, make sure everyone on board is wearing a life jacket.

“Keep some of your safety equipment close to you in case something does happen where you can throw that forward to somebody and give them a little more extra ability to stay afloat,” Blackerby said.
