(CNN) - If you’re trying to watch your wallet, you might want to consider buying a different type of breakfast meat.

Bacon prices are sizzling while ham prices are cooling off.

According to inflation data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, bacon is nearly 7% more expensive than it was a year ago.

Meanwhile, somewhat strangely, ham prices dropped more than 6% since last year.

You might expect any supply issues like too many or two few hogs to cause prices of each of the items to move up or down.

But in this case, the rising cost of bacon is largely due to demand.

Experts say people are more willing to pay more for bacon than some other pork products, and that lets retailers keep those prices high.

In some cases, they may even raise them to make up for the lower price for other products.
