(Gray News) – The days of free refills may soon be over at McDonald’s.

According to a Marketplace report, McDonald’s will phase out its self-serve soda machines by 2032.

At that time, individual McDonald’s locations can decide whether or not to charge for refills.

Some McDonald’s locations have already removed the self-serve beverage machines, and customers are taking notice.

McDonald’s launched the self-serve soda machines in 2004, with the goal of making the dining experience easier for guests to serve themselves.

Experts said there are numerous reasons for the shift, according to the Marketplace report, including theft, the amount of space the machines take up, and McDonald’s new emphasis on a “relaxed dine-in experience,” which includes servers bringing meals to the table.

In addition, the cleaning and upkeep of the self-service soda machines are significant.

Customers are also still concerned about germs and viruses since the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in high-touch areas like soda machines.
