Trader Joe’s is recalling basil over salmonella concerns

(Gray News) - Trader Joe’s is asking its customers to give their groceries a second look as a brand of basil sold at the grocery store has been recalled.

The retailer said on Wednesday it is recalling its Infinite Herbs Organic Basil because the product could be contaminated with salmonella.

The products were sold in 2.5-ounce packages between Feb. 1 and April 6 in several states: Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Wisconsin and Washington D.C.

The affected product includes the UPC# 8 18042 02147 7.

The company didn’t say whether illnesses had been associated with this product or how the potential contamination was discovered.

Trader Joe’s said customers with the affected product should throw it away or return it to the store for a refund.

Salmonella is a bacteria that causes an estimated 1 million foodborne illnesses each year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. Youth and older people are more susceptible to getting sick. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps.
