ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR/Gray News) - A man was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon after police in Rockford, Illinois, said he attacked and stabbed multiple people.

Police and the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office said there were a total of 11 victims in the attacks, including four who died from their injuries. Police said not all of the victims were stabbed.

The Rockford Police Department identified the deceased as a 15-year-old girl, a 63-year-old woman, a 49-year-old man and a 22-year-old man. Investigators confirmed one of those killed was a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier.

“I think like most Rockfordians, I’m just totally shaken by this act of violence and the impact that it’s having now on multiple families’ lives,” Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara said. “So certainly, my prayers are with them as they’re just beginning to deal with what will be really difficult days and weeks ahead.”

Police say five others are being treated for serious injuries at area hospitals. The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office said two more people were hurt in its jurisdiction.

First responders were initially dispatched Wednesday at around 1:15 p.m. to Holmes Street for medical calls. Additional requests came in for police to help at nearby addresses on Cleveland Avenue, Winnetka Drive and Eggleston Road.

Approximately 20 minutes after the first call came in, authorities took a 22-year-old man into custody. Rockford Police Chief Carla Redd said investigators do not believe any other suspects are at large. She says there is no clear motive for the attacks.

The Rockford Police Department, Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office and other federal officials are assisting in the investigation. No charges have been filed at this time.
