A Better East Texas: Dealing with border security

EAST TEXAS (KLTV/KTRE) - In a recent poll conducted by the Texas Politics Project at the University of Texas, a strong majority of Texans from both parties believe the situation at the southern border is either a crisis or a serious problem.

So, this is crossing party lines as federal candidates and even local candidates line up touting border solutions. The fact that voters from both parties strongly agree on an issue is rare these days and should send a message that the status quo is not acceptable. This reflects on both the Executive branch and the Legislative branch – meaning the President and Congress.

And now we have at least 2 states – Michigan and Massachusetts that are asking residents to provide shelter and other accommodations to migrant families. These moves are believed to help ease the burden on these states resources that are now stretched to the breaking point. But this approach isn’t a solution to the issue and it is hardly a band-aid in these states.

Participating residents are asked to help children get enrolled in school and also to help adults find employment. The Federal government is responsible for providing a secure border – we’ve said it before – and efforts by states only treat a symptom and don’t address the cause. Our leaders must be held accountable now and in the future for following our laws, creating solutions to crises, and compassionately dealing with migrants.

This has become the top issue in our state and a road to a solution demands that same priority – and that will make for a Better East Texas.
