KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV/Gray News) - Police in Kansas City, Missouri, said at least one person is dead following a shooting near the stage at Union Station just moments after the Chiefs Super Bowl parade ended.

Kansas City police reported shots were fired near the garage at Union Station and several people were struck.

Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves reported 22 people had been shot, one of whom has died.

Kansas City radio station KKFI told the Associated Press that one of its DJs, Lisa Lopez, died in the shooting. It’s unclear at this time if Lopez’s death is the one fatality police have confirmed.

“This senseless act has taken a beautiful person from her family and this KC Community,” the station said in a statement to the Associated Press.

Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City reported to KCTV that they have received 12 patients, 11 of whom were children. The hospital stated that nine of those patients have gunshot wounds. Hospital officials said all the children, who range in age from 6 to 15, are expected to recover, and none of their injuries were critical.

KCTV also reported officials with University Health Truman Medical Center said it was treating eight gunshot victims, two of whom are in critical condition. Four other people were treated for non-gunshot injuries.

St. Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City received one gunshot patient in critical condition and three walk-in patients with injuries that were not life-threatening, spokesperson Laurel Gifford said.

Three people, who were armed, have been taken into custody for more investigation, according to Kansas City police. Graves said she heard that fans may have been involved in the pursuit of one of the suspects.

Graves reported it is still an active investigation.

Reporters with KCTV who were on the scene reported spectators heard what sounded like fireworks before a scene of “sheer panic” broke out. Witnesses reported hearing the sounds just as the celebratory rally was wrapping up and people were making their way out.

Hundreds of thousands of fans were reported to have filled the streets of Kansas City Wednesday to celebrate the Chiefs’ Super Bowl win. KCTV reported earlier that day, almost the entire Chiefs team was at the stage near Union Station during the rally.

“I’m angry at what happened today. The people who came to this celebration should expect a safe environment,” Graves said.

The Kansas City Chiefs posted a statement to X, formerly known as Twitter, saying they are saddened by the incident and that no one involved with the team was hurt.

“Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and all of Kansas City,” the team posted.

Patrick Mahomes posted on X, “Praying for Kansas City”, with several prayer hand emojis, following news of the shooting. Fellow team member, Drue Tranquill also posted online, saying in part “Please join me in prayer for all the victims in this heinous act.”

Missouri Gov. Mike Parson and the first lady were also at the parade when shots were reported and are safe, Parson said online.

Lucas reported the White House has reached out to offer assistance in the investigations.

President Joe Biden released a statement about the shooting late Wednesday night, saying in part, “Jill and I pray for those killed and injured today, and for our country to find the resolve to end the senseless epidemic of gun violence tearing us at the seams.”

The Chiefs won 25-22 over the San Francisco 49ers in overtime Sunday. It is the Chiefs’ third Super Bowl win in five seasons.
