CARTHAGE, Texas (KLTV) - Carthage has found a unique solution to completing their football schedule following realignment.

The school has scheduled a 6A team, which is two classes higher than Carthage’s 4A.

The Bulldogs will play San Benito in Week 6 in 2024.

Coach Scott Surratt said the game will be played at a neutral site, likely in the Houston or Austin areas. San Benito is in the Harlingen area and over 500 miles from Carthage.

“We went into realignment just with Kilgore scheduled just a couple days before and we scheduled Jasper the day of realignment,” Surratt said. “That’s never happened before. We hadn’t been looking for this many games before.”

Surratt said San Benito, who went 10-2 last year, then called him and asked about playing. San Benito joins Chapel Hill and Liberty-Eylau as the other non-district games.

“We want to play games close to us, rival games,” Surratt said. “But we can only play teams that will play us. We searched for some in Louisiana and Arkansas and even reached out to one in Oklahoma but it didn’t work out.”
