A Better East Texas: Jay-Z at Grammys

It is fine to have an opinion of award recipients, but to suggest that there was something wrong with the winners or process really shows a value flaw.

EAST TEXAS (KLTV/KTRE) - Recently the Grammy organization held their annual awards show.

While some of the award recipients seemed truly humbled with their recognition, many, some would say most, were displaying grand egos of the industry. For what it is worth the TV audience actually increased over last year. During the Grammys, entertainment mogul Jay-Z was awarded the Doctor Dre Global Impact Award – a kind of lifetime achievement recognition.

It is much deserved for Jay-Z and while he recognized the monumental meaning of the award and how it was reflective of honoring his entire career, he still delivered some out-of-touch comments. Jay-Z noted that his wife Beyonce had 32 Grammys but had yet to win Album of the Year. He alluded that there was something wrong with that and that, in his opinion, she certainly deserved it.

It is fine to have an opinion of award recipients, but to suggest that there was something wrong with the winners or process really shows a value flaw. Jay-Z was shown drinking out of the Grammy statue after the show. But his words reveal that even with top-of-the-industry success and recognition, so many people, regardless of financial stature, still crave the social accolades that some of these awards represent.

We see it all the time on social media where posters show selfies or posts, purely to look for some kind of social media affirmation. So, I guess it is just more of a human condition. But it just isn’t a positive one, and one we should all consider resisting.
