NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) - Dozens of people showed support for State Rep. Travis Clardy as he seeks re-election in the Texas House.

“We’re going to stand strong, we’re going to stand tall, we’re going to keep fighting for the people,” said Clardy.

Clardy spoke to a crowd at The Fredonia Hotel about his stance against funding for school vouchers, the special bills he’s been trying to get passed, and a recent cease and desist he received from Governor Greg Abbott’s campaign.

Clardy said Monday’s event wasn’t a protest.

“We know we have strong support here. We’ve always represent the people of Nacogdoches here well, and they’ve always voted for us, but to see people come out in the middle of the day, this support to [my wife] and I,” he said.

Cushing ISD superintendent Brandon Enos said he was on the governor’s task force for teacher vacancies in the state. He believes “this governor used everything we told him we needed against us to try to get vouchers passed.”

Nacogdoches ISD teachers Ashley Lumbley and Lizbeth Monter explained why they are against school vouchers.

“That way our kids don’t fall behind and right now it is a struggle. We need to get more funding so we can get more resources and more support in the classroom,” said Monter.

“We don’t want to be stagnant. We want to be growing in our education,” said Lumbley.

Nacogdoches resident Pattie Greer said she came to show her support because Clardy has done a lot for her district.

“He was instrumental in getting in SFA with the University of Texas System,” said Greer.
