SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (Gray News) – A Georgia sheep dog was named the 2024 Farm Dog of the Year.

Skippy, a 4-year-old mixed breed, won the award at the American Farm Bureau Federation Convention in Salt Lake City.

The contest celebrates farm dogs that work alongside farmers and ranchers as they produce food for families and pets across the country.

Life as a farm dog is not without risks, as they often help round up livestock and defend against predators.

Skippy is no stranger to many of these tasks as she helps her owners, Georgia Farm Bureau members Donald and Laura Adams. She has been with the Adams for about two years, with her main role helping to move beef cattle to where they need to go.

Her place on the farm is even more important due to an injury Donald Adams sustained injuries in 2019 that paralyzed him from the neck down.

“Skippy’s a partner, she’s a pet and she helps us with the cattle every day,” he said. “Being able to keep the cows and having something for me to live for every day…she has contributed to that immensely.”

Skippy and the Adams won a number of prizes donated by Purina, including $5,000, a trophy plate, and a year’s supply of dog food and other products for Skippy.

Three regional runners-up and a People’s Choice Pup were also awarded at the convention.
