TRINITY COUNTY Texas (KTRE) - Firefighters with Trinity Fire and Rescue and the Texas A&M Forest Service are battling a 100-acre wildfire at the Glendale Hunting Club, according to Trinity City Manager Steven Jones.

The Glendale Hunting Club is located off State Highway 94.

At about 7 p.m. Saturday night, the Texas Department of Transportation’s Lufkin office tweeted that TxDOT crews are going to close SH 94 in the Glendale community area due to low visibility caused by the wildfire.

“Crews will monitor and reopen the roadway once it is safe to do so” the tweet stated. “Motorists should choose alternate routes.”

A post on the Groveton Volunteer Fire Department Facebook page warned people traveling on SH 94 to be on the alert for firefighting trucks and equipment.

Trinity County Sheriff Woody Wallace posted a video about the fire on his Facebook page Saturday afternoon.

“Right now, it’s about 100 acres and growing,” Wallace said in the video.

Wallace said motorists traveling on SH 94 should expect delays. He added that people need to slow down to the slowest speed they can go to get through the area.

“Sometime this afternoon, if this fire gets any closer to the road, we expect to have to close the road (SH 94),” Wallace said.

The sheriff said no structures are in immediate danger at this time, but the situation could change at any moment, depending on the weather. Wallace said his office will let people know if anyone needs to be evacuated.

Wallace said to be on the safe side people who live in the Glendale area might want to start watering down their yards and anything outdoors that they do not want to catch on fire.

“We’ve got air support on the way,” Wallace said. “They’re going to drop water on it from the air.”

Later in the video, Wallace urged people to stop calling 911 unless they have homes or buildings in immediate danger. He explained that the number of calls is overwhelming Trinity County’s 911 system.

“We know there is a fire on Highway 94,” Wallace said.

On a related note, Trinity County commissioners issued a burn ban on Tuesday, according to a Nixle alert posted on Wallace’s Facebook page. All outdoor burning is prohibited.
