Wildfire burns hundreds of acres in Nebraska Panhandle

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A wildfire is burning in the Oglala National Grassland in northwest Nebraska.

The fire started Tuesday about 35 miles west of Chadron.

A helicopter was called in to help, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

It is dipping water out of nearby Lake Whitney and dumping it on the flames.

By Wednesday afternoon, the fire had burned 340 acres, the Forest Service said.

But firefighters have been able to keep from spreading beyond that perimeter.

In addition to the Forest Service, fire departments from Chadron, Crawford and Harrison responded.

The public is urged to avoid Lake Whitney to give the helicopter room.
