Train derails in rural Fillmore County after crashing into fertilizer truck

EXETER, Neb. (KLKN) – A train derailed Friday after a crash with a fertilizer truck in rural Fillmore County.

Fillmore County Chief Deputy Mark McFarland said a fertilizer truck tried to cross the track just after 10 a.m., when it was hit by a westbound train.

The crash caused 15 to 20 cars to derail.  County Road 20, just west of Exeter, was shut down.

McFarland said there is no danger to the public.

“There was no spillage of any kind, no hazardous material,” he said.

A crew member on the train was taken to a hospital with minor injuries and was expected to be released later Friday, McFarland said.

The driver of the fertilizer truck was not injured.

Cleanup is underway, but McFarland estimated that the track will be shut down for days.
