Sen. Pete Ricketts calls for more sanctions on Iran after attack on Israel

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Sen. Pete Ricketts on Wednesday called for more sanctions on Iran.

Over the weekend, Iran launched hundreds of drones and missiles at Israel.

Iran’s attack is a huge escalation of its involvement in the Israel-Hamas conflict. This is also the first time Iran has attacked Israel directly.

The first action that Ricketts called for from the Biden administration is to tighten up sanctions on trade with Iran.

Billions of dollars go into Iran from the oil trade, so Ricketts believes enforcing sanctions will financially strangle Iran’s funding of terrorism.

“What we’d like to see is that Israel wraps up its operations in Gaza to destroy Hamas,” he said. “Iran does not want to see that happen because they’re worried that this will lead to a coalition of countries who are tired of their terrorism then pushing back on Iran.”

Iran said any retaliation by Israel will be met with “a massive and harsh response.”
