Mystery group sends campaign mailers attacking Gage County candidate

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Some voters in Gage County are getting a political postcard targeting a local candidate from a group with no record of its existence.

Emily Haxby is running for reelection as the Gage County supervisor for District 2. She said a recent mailing campaign is making false claims about her.

“The mailer was sent out just days before the election to manipulate a local race,” she said.

The mailers came from an organization calling itself Nebraska Trump PAC.

“We were not able to find anything about them,” Haxby said.

She said she called the Nebraska Accountability and Disclosure commission, which said it has no record of the group.

Channel 8 searched the commission’s database of campaign finance filings and came up empty.

Nebraska First PAC – formed by former gubernatorial candidate Charles Herbster – came into her defense.

It said it has no connections or ties to the group sending these mailers.

Herbster is offering a $2,000 reward for information on who’s behind the mailer campaign.

“I don’t know if this is something where we can see some kind of legislation in the future to stop this type of manipulation because you are going to stop good people from running for office,” Haxby said.

Her opponent in the Republican primary, Jim Ensz, said he’s been a victim of misinformation, too.

“I have no idea who is sending them,” he said. “But I would ask everyone, on all sides, to stop. I’m tired of people spreading lies about both me and Emily.”
