Lincoln optometrist shares importance of protective glasses for solar eclipse

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN)-  A total eclipse will pass over North America on Monday, with some areas experiencing complete darkness during the event.

Those in Lincoln will see a partial eclipse, with 80% of coverage expected.

Dr. Daniel Novak, an optometrist in Lincoln, urges people to wear eye protection despite the partial coverage.

“At all times, we recommend UV protection for the sun to protect your eyes, but especially during this eclipse,” Novak said.

Looking at the eclipse without protection can cause retinas to burn.

“It can only take just a few seconds to do it,” Novak said.

To ensure you have the right eclipse glasses, make sure they have the barcode “ISO 12312-2:2015.”
