Investigation finds potential violations by Windstream in Nebraska 911 outages

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Nebraska Public Service Commission completed its investigation Tuesday into three 911 outages.

The agency said it found possible violations by Windstream and opened a complaint against the company.

“Through our investigation we have determined that violations of Commission regulations may have occurred,” commission Chairman Dan Watermeier said in a press release. “The complaint, provides the Commission the ability to hold the carrier accountable through punitive actions.”

The state investigated three Windstream outages that caused 911 service disruptions in recent months.

The first, on Sept. 2 and 3, affected 911 service in southeast Nebraska.

Another outage happened on Nov. 28, raising the ire of state senators.

On Jan. 13, two fiber lines were cut, causing an hourlong outage on all of Windstream’s lines.

The commission will hold a hearing on the complaint on Aug. 27 and 28.

Windstream could face fines if officials determine that it violated regulations.
