Athlete of the Week: Malcolm High School pitcher Maddox Meyer

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – From sinking 3-pointers on the hardwood to tossing touchdowns on the gridiron to throwing strikeouts on the mound, Malcolm High School senior Maddox Meyer is quite the multisport athlete.

This semester, Meyer averaged 14 points on the court, threw for over 1,800 yards on the football field, and went 9-0 with a 0.72 ERA in baseball.

Meyer is also a champion, leading Malcolm to its first Class C state baseball title last season.

A year later, the Clippers returned for another chance at glory.

Malcolm faced off with Elkhorn Mount Michael Benedictine in the title game at Werner Park in Omaha.

Meyer started the game, and after allowing two runs, he settled in.

“My slider was not there early,” he explained. “They hit a few around a few times. I started working with my curveball more, and that was working. I was able to spot my fastball. And that’s when success really started to happen.”

The Clippers trailed 2-0 heading into the final inning.

But Malcolm put together an incredible comeback with Noah Gonyea’s two-run walk-off single, securing back-to-back titles.

Meyer pitched a complete game, striking out nine batters and only allowing two runs.

“It’s great, going out on a win,” he said. “You know, us seniors — all four of us — we’ve been playing baseball our whole lives. Just having this final moment and have it happen this way with a senior getting the walk-off hit, it’s special. It really hits home.”

Meyer’s talent on the baseball diamond caught the eye of the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and he signed with the Mavericks last September.

Malcolm head coach Zach Wehner said Meyer is a big part of the program.

When the program started, Meyer was a sophomore and was a “good pitcher” but not the ace.

“He just kept working his butt off, you know, in the offseason, working on his throwing, working on his mechanics,” Wehner said. “And then last year kind of was his year that he came through, and then he just kind of continued on this year and had a dominant performance all year long.”
