Affidavit: Man caught with drugs, stolen vehicle and sawed-off shotgun in Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A Lincoln man is facing several felony charges after he was caught last week with drugs and a stolen vehicle, authorities say.

On July 4, a trooper tried pulling over a Chevy Impala for improperly turning near Cornhusker Highway and Superior Street.

But the driver didn’t stop and sped off on Cornhusker Highway, court documents say.  The trooper chased after the vehicle but eventually stopped due to safety concerns.

Later on, investigators learned that the Chevy was reported stolen in Milford, according to an arrest affidavit.

The next day, the trooper spotted the vehicle unoccupied at an apartment near North 16th and Knox streets.  He called in additional units to respond to the area.

Authorities turned on their emergency lights and blocked the vehicle in, court records say.  They then noticed movement in the second-story windows of the apartment.

Inside the vehicle, troopers saw a sawed-off double-barrel shotgun on the driver’s seat, according to the affidavit.

This is when 28-year-old Zachary Douglas ran out the back of the apartment, the affidavit alleges.  Troopers caught up and took him into custody.

Douglas had two bags containing about 31 grams of meth in his pockets.  Seven alprazolam pills, a drug typically used to treat anxiety disorders, were also found in an unmarked bottle.

At a court hearing on Monday, Douglas was charged with six felonies, including theft and possession of meth.

A Lancaster County judge set Douglas’ bond at $500,000, meaning he must pay $50,000 to be released from jail.  His next court appearance is set for Aug. 13.
