She then spent eight years as a part-time feature reporter, creating award-winning documentaries, while working a flexible schedule to accommodate her children.

Julie returned to the set full time in August, 2016.

Her on-air work and writing have earned her numerous journalism awards, including a National Edward R. Murrow Award, and three Emmy awards.

She was also the recipient of the 2013 Andy Award for best international journalism, from the University of Nebraska, Omaha. In April 2013, Julie traveled to South Sudan, Africa, where she produced an hour-long documentary on a medical mission team from Omaha.
